ABOUT

HISTORY:

Based in the Southern Peninsula, Tom Gray has landscaped gardens all over Cape Town for more than 10 years. Raised at his parents (Horticulturalist Gael Gray and Landscaper Roger Gray) small holding at Good Hope Nursery, identifying fynbos in the mountains and working on landscaping jobs in his school holidays, gardening came naturally. He worked as a landscaper for the family business for many years. Early on in his career he was fortunate enough to work with Sanparks on a number of search and rescue projects – rehabilitating disturbed sights and sensitive ecosystems/biomes around the Cape. He has also worked on several movies in the greens department but decided to continue with the more creative rewarding work of landscaping. He started up his own company, Good Hope Gardens Landscaping, in 2011.

INDIGENOUS GARDENS:

Specializing in Indigenous and Fynbos gardens, he has a reputation for his Natural Designs – always trying to incorporate endemic/red data fynbos from your area into his landscapes/design. With his vast plant knowledge, he encourages you to be involved in the process of choosing the plants and planning the layout as much as possible. This is usually done at the Good Hope Gardens Nursery. He can then advise as to what will and won’t grow in your garden’s micro-climate/space as well as eventual heights and growth habits, numbers required and other important things to consider when planning a garden design.                                                                                     He sources the majority of the plants he uses in his gardens from Good Hope Gardens Nursery (insert link) near Cape Point.

ROOF GARDENS:

For many years he has explored with materials and construction with roof gardens. Having been involved with the construction and design of more than a dozen roof gardens in the Cape Peninsula, his experience in this field is extensive. His roof gardens have been a talking point for the press and he is proud to be listed on the Green Star SA certified list http://www.gbcsa.org.za/greenstar/projectdir.php Project name: Cocoon Eco Lofts
